Many of his students have been extremely successful: Candida Hofer, Thomas Struth, Jorg Sasse and, most notably, Andreas Gursky. When Becher retired in 1996, Jeff Wall was chosen to succeed him, but when Wall came to meet the class for the first time, he was confronted by a former Becher student holding a loaded gun. Wall resigned immediately. Bernd Becher was enraged by the academy's passivity during the affair. The chair then went to Thomas Ruff, one of Becher's best-known students, though a bit of a maverick.

If one can measure the importance of an artist by whether an attempt has been made on their life, then Jeff Wall is up there with Andy Warhol. In 1996, the Canadian photographer was offered the professorial position of legendary German photographer Bernd Becher at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art - the world's most prestigious academic photographic gig. It was from here that Becher had taught and launched a new photographic school on the world led by Gursky, Struth and Ruff. Wall accepted the offer, he went there. His classes were hugely oversubscribed. Some students got turned away. One was so disgruntled that he showed up with a loaded gun. Wall was shocked. He immediately resigned and returned to Canada.

◇ 1190 ハッセルブラッド賞 ジェフ・ウォールに決定 - photo-eyes（2002/11/02 23:27）
「写真界のノーベル賞」とも言われる(ハッセルブラッドがスウェーデン生まれということもある)ハッセルブラッド賞が、カナダ生まれの写真作家、ジェフ・ウォールに決定したとの知らせが郵送されてきた。ちなみに、この賞は、日本人では濱谷浩と杉本博司の二人が過去に受賞している。
あわてて、ホームページを見てみたところ、11/4まで下記のサイトはクローズ状態で、今、このニュースのページを準備中というところだ。11/4には、詳細を下記サイトで見ることができる。
ジェフ・ウォールの展覧会は、数年前に水戸芸術館で開催されている。ドクメンタにも何度が参加しており、受賞にふさわしい国際的な作家のひとりであることは衆目の一致するところだろう。
余談になるが、ジェフ・ウォールは、いったんベッヒャーの跡を継ぎデュッセルドルフの美術アカデミーの写真クラスの教授を引き受けたものの、それに恨みをもつ学生にピストルで脅されるというスキャンダルがもちあがり、即刻、彼はカナダに帰ったというつらいこともあった。その後、2000年にトーマス・ルフが写真クラスの跡を継いだ。
