Thomas Demand in conversation at the Art Gallery of NSW - YouTube

Thomas Demand in conversation with Judy Annear, senior curator of photographs. Introduced by Head of International art Tony Bond and well-know collector and art patron John Kaldor.

Thomas Demand is a Berlin-based artist. He is known for his highly luminous and compelling photography of 1:1 models, which he constructs from paper and cardboard. The models are often based on pre-existing photographs or press images and are destroyed once the photograph is taken. Demand's practice interlaces sculpture, architecture and photography and forces us to reconsider our perceptions of a highly mediated world.

Demand studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and at Goldsmiths College in London. He has exhibited extensively internationally, including a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2005. Currently he is a Getty Scholar at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles.

Demand's work is on display in the new contemporary galleries as part of the John Kaldor Collection.
