◇ Public Art Fund Talks at The New School: Thomas Schütte - YouTube

Thomas Schütte (b. 1954, Oldenburg, Germany) is one of the most important and influential figures in contemporary art. From architectural structures to sculptures, prints, drawings, and watercolors, his diverse and highly accomplished body of work resists categorization. For the past two decades, the contemplation of fundamental questions about our contemporary human condition has been a central concern in his ongoing sculptural series, "United Enemies." Exploring the human form with a remarkable technical facility, his commanding yet detailed figures embody the expressive and metaphorical power of his work.

The New School for Public Engagement is a division of The New School, a university in New York City offering distinguished degree, certificate, and continuing education programs in art and design, liberal arts, management and policy, and the performing arts.

◇ United Enemies - Public Art in Central Park, NYC - YouTube

This video is about a sculpture by German Artist Thomas Schutte entitled "United Enemies". It is presented by the Public Art fund that was founded by Doris Freedman. The sculpture depicts a pair of 13 foot tall men who are bound together and placed atop poles or supports forming tripods. It is a piece that is in sharp contrast to the many monumental statues found in New York City in where impressive and confident poses are the norm. The fact that this piece sits at the entrance to the serene and beautiful Central Park also seems a bit contradictory. Therefore, United Enemies makes us think about the inspiration and meaning behind this work. This work has been displayed in Turin, Italy and London, England. It will remain on display in on the Southeast corner of Central Park (5th Ave. & 60th Street) through August 25, 2013. The daytime videos and pictures were taken on Sunday, June 16, 2013.
