本展覧会は、東京と台北という2つの異なる都市空間を舞台に活動するコンテンポラリー・アーティストの制作に着目した展覧会です。本展キュレーターの葉佳蓉は、日本で活動するアーティストへのインタビューや交流を通して彼らの制作を調査してきました。 自らのフィールドワーク・リサーチを通して、文化的に異なる背景をもつ東京と台北における都市型生活を背景に、個々のアーティストが展開する創作と思考を参照、観察し、クリエイティビティや表現が人や社会・環境とどのように関わるのか、また、アートを通した批判的アプローチの可能性を展覧会構成の核におきます。
個人という単位から都市に接するとき、小林史子は作家の身体と彼女を取り巻く人工物の関係に着目し、機能的な都市の在り方に新しい意味を与え、西澤諭志は東京と台北の若者の生活を比較し、都市生活者としての彼らの住空間から見えてくる重層的な時間や事物が堆積した風景を観察します。一方王建浩は 人々が思い描く「理想の生活」に対する消費社会とマスメディアによる影響に疑問を投げかけます。アーティスト自らの行為をもってコミュニティへと働きかけるとき、北澤潤は住民の高齢化と住宅需要の変化に対し、集合住宅への新しいアプローチとし て、地域の（新たな）アイデンティティ形成のためのプロジェクトを提案します。温釣揚は都市のマイノリティに焦点を当て、ホームレス状態にある人々のため の架空のホテルを制作します。また、料理最前線は市民運動やデモが急速な展開を見せる昨今の台湾の政治的な状況に触発され、人々が抱える問題に対しひとつ の解となるアイディアと新しい考え方を示します。都市開発による動植物の生態系への影響もまた看過できない問題でしょう。許家榕は開発により移動を余儀なくされた台北の人や樹木を題材に、 都市環境における自然のあり方を注意深く検証しています。
現在の都市型生活における、ある種の「ねじれ」。本展覧会では、「ねじれ」から生み出される余剰、ひずみ、空白を創作へと拡張するアートの可能性の探求を目的としています。また、この展覧会では個々のアーティストの、制作や思考のプロセスをオープンにすることで、その作品を起点としてより多くの議論を生み出す事を試みます。
The exhibition aims to discuss the urban landscape based on people’s activities. Artists from Taiwan and Japan are invited to do field researches in Tokyo and Taipei, and provide alternative approaches to the city. Besides cultural differences, modern city, as a reference to review people’s living, actually share many common system. Through artists’ observation, interpretation and social engagement, the exhibition opens the imagination of using of spaces in a city, also to challenge the current distribution of spaces in urban society.
Kobayashi Fumiko reconsiders the connection of body to artificial surroundings, providing new description to the functions in the city. Nishizawa Satoshi compares the living of young generation in both Tokyo and Taipei, trying to observe the sceneries composed of layered time and things in their urbanite ways of living. Chien-hao Wang questions the imagination of “ideal living” and indicates the influence from mass media and consumerism. Starting from personal experiences, some works also react to the society. With the aging of population and shift of housing needs, Kitazawa Jun suggests the new approach to housing complex and build up the neighborhood identity. Jyun-yang Wen focuses on the minority in the city and creates a hotel for the homeless people. Cooking at the Frontline is inspired by current political situation in Taiwan, with rapid demonstrations and movements taking place, they try to provide solutions and new perspectives to street life. Development of city always evades the space for other species. In Chai-ruon Hsu’s work, she discusses the migration of trees and people depending on human’s behavior and tries to raise people’s conscious to trees in city environment.
The understanding to urban spaces are usually based on one’s living style, and yet we are lack of chances to review the distribution of spaces in the environment. With the continuing of each projects, exhibition can only be a periodic presentation, and hope to cause more attention to distribution of space in cities.
