SYMPOSIUM
Constructions of Time: Still and Moving Imagery
This one-day symposium invites audiences to consider different ways in which the relationship between still and moving images is mobilized in contemporary artistic practice. Defined through and against one another, the relationship between stillness and motion is fundamental to moving image theory and discourse, and remains a central examination in many artists' work. The symposium features contributions from artists, curators and writers who will present both theoretical and practice-led perspectives on the topic, offering new approaches to thinking about this relationship in an age of image proliferation.
MORNING
Our morning session explores temporality as it relates to still photography and the cinematic experience of moving imagery. Speakers will consider the contemporaneity and intersectionality of each, foregrounding the relationships between film and photography, and motion and stillness. Close attention to these relationships will point towards the possibilities for each medium as they relate to temporality, materiality, memory and historicity.
AFTERNOON
The afternoon session considers constructions of time. The speakers will offer research and curatorial methodologies that expose temporal paradigms in philosophical, artistic and poetic terms. How might intersection of still and moving images offer a model for simultaneously looking forwards and backwards? How might we consider the visibility of still and moving imagery in an age of image proliferation?
