»Das blaue Licht/ Blue light«

Berlin artist Stephanie Kloss will introduce at KioskShop berlin (KSb) her recent photographs, the Eisbilder/Ice images.

Understanding the term of photography in its original sense as light-drawing, you may get quite close to the works of the artist Stephanie Kloss. Technically it may proof right, but it doesn’t help to understand their deeper significance.
The new series of the Eisbilder/Ice images carries one away into cold light spaces of an ice gallery and makes one curious to its inner life. Her artworks aren’t about illustration, potraiture or documentation: The external reality is the foundation to create with the photographical process a new reality. The ice space with its light sources becomes an abstract light space, whose well placed light volume ‚pulse’ the photograph in differently strong peculiar, almost engrossed tranquility. One can not define its borders, a characteristic common to the photographical oevre of Stephanie Kloss. If it be the Bergbilder/ Mountain images or the Nebelwälder/ Foggy forests of Caracas, the carefully ‚captured’ light ‚draws’ diffusely the reality. It illuminates magically, but also dramatically natural or man made habitat which size and depth one cannot grasp. The natural space ( or man made space) becomes
a stage for a play which content and direction one cannot understand nor predict its outcome. One is faced and expects the uncomprehensible. The glance marches over the photograph to penetrate the space, to measure it and to locate, but doesn’t get calm, despite of its stoical tranquillity. One thinks of metaphysics and an experience of sublimity takes on.
Stephanie Kloss experience of constructing space as an architect and the moving image as an video artists has brought her that far. To stage reality that seems to be real for us and which undermines our visual experience and that seems to be constructed as a (landscape) model, this is for itself classy!

The title »Das blaue Licht/ Blue light« of her recent work refers to the same titled early work of and with Leni Riefenstahl from 1932 in which the blue light of a christal grotto in the mountains is shown. Maybe it could be understood as a reference of the longing towards nature and the reform movement as a contradiction to the industrialised world at the beginning of the 20th century. Stephanie Kloss is aware of the ambiguity of her ‚constructed Romanticism’ as an answer to the digitalised mediaworld of our time, but also the awareness of manipulation during construction. Nevertheless, in a small photograph, the artist is staging herself in the same pose in front of a christal, like the young Riefenstahl once did.
