◇ Artist Bios - The New York Photo Festival | The Future of Contemporary Photography

Osamu Kanemura was born in Tokyo in 1964. As a young man, Kanemura developed an interest in punk rock and experimental film, eventually producing both. After realizing he was not fit for teamwork, he became interested in photography—a practice that can be completed alone with a camera and a darkroom. His influences included Eugène Atget, Garry Winogrand, and Lee Friedlander, and megalopolises, which have always served as his main workplace and inspiration. Kanemura has been a part of many solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries since 1992. He has published over five books of photography, including Spider’s Strategy, (Osiris, 2001) and German Suplex (Osiris, 2008). His works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
