Originally produced by Gary Todd in 1999, the release of this exciting and historic music was delayed for years under tragic circumstances. These are the first and only studio recordings by this all-star trio whose brief existence in the mid Sixties has been a whispered rumor for decades. ◇ Joseph Holbrooke Trio 『The Moat Recordings』 - みみのまばたき
「インプロヴィゼーション―即興演奏の彼方へ」を読めば、デレク・ベイリー(ｇ･2005年12月没)、トニー・オクスリー(Dr)、ギャビン・ブライヤーズ(Bass)によるこの歴史的なトリオの演奏を絶対聴かねばと思う筈だが、これまで手に入ったのは「マイルス･モード」や「９８ライブ」など、断片的な記録であって、割と拍子抜けな感じが拭えなかったと思う。
この2枚組は、1998年の演奏が、紆余曲折を経てようやくTZADIKからリリースされたもので、これが初めて（そして最後の）まともな形でのリリースということになるのではないかと。肝心の内容はといえば、これまでの心もとなさを払拭してあまりある素晴らしい内容。
安易な共鳴など決してすることのない３人の演奏が、奇跡的な距離を互いに保ちながら、変幻自在に持続していく様に付き合うのは、絶えず緊張を求められつつ、安心感があるあまりなかった経験だ。ベイリーのギターもリラックスして豊かに聴こえるし、パーカッションは変幻自在だが、あらゆるイディオムから離れて荒涼としているというのとはベクトルが違うように思う。逆に、あらゆるイディオムに分化していく可能性といったらいいのか･･･。上質のジャズに共通する柔軟なムードから入っていけるので、普段フリー・インプロものに抵抗を感じている人に先ずはじめに聴いてみてもらいたい。さほど拒絶反応は出ないんではないかと。
