◇ 『Art in Latin America』

Despite the growing importance of contemporary art from Latin America in the last two decades, no book exists that thoroughly explore this phenomenon. Art in Latin America aims to fill that gap and to offer the reader an interpretative frame with which to understand the importance of contemporary art in this complex and diverse region. The book covers the vibrant Latin American art scene since 1990 through a detailed study of new and unconventional art practices. It offers an original and in-depth interpretation of more than a hundred works in the fields of sculpture, installation, performance, video and public art. The author focuses particularly on disruptive and politically committed art works that challenge the traditional forms of 20th-century art and recognise the need to strengthen freedom of expression and processes of democratisation in Latin America. The book examines the interaction of form and content in works by Latin American-born or based artists, including Gabriel Orozco, Doris Salcedo, Ernesto Neto, Francis Alys, Jorge Macchi, Santiago Sierra, Carlos Garaicoa, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. It also studies recent works by emerging artists including Rivane Neuenschwander, Javier Tellez, Donna Conlon, David Zink Yi, Hector Zamora and Regina Jose Galindo.

◇ 『Contemporary Art in Latin America (Artworld)』

Contemporary Art in Latin America continues the ARTWORLD series, bringing to light innovative contemporary art from across the globe. Delving into the artistic work from specific major geographical regions, the series continues to showcase both established and unknown artists whose work connects with their roots.

New in paperback, Contemporary Art in Latin America celebrates this intriguing region and its creative outputs, setting the vibrant artistic tradition within its historical and cultural contexts. The volume opens with a text section, including essays by valued figures in the contemporary art world, looking firstly at the historical origins of Latin American art and moving on to focus extensively on contemporary work being produced by artists from this region. This section of the book will also be supported by an artist interview, offering the reader a personal insight into the relationship between Latin America’s art and its cultural past, present and future. The second half of the book comprises a plate section showcasing a broad variety of the art and themes discussed elsewhere in the book. Contemporary Art in Latin America encourages readers to reflect upon the art in this region and by these artists in relation to its historical and geographical context and encompasses a wide spectrum of critical debates, including politics and curatorial practice.

The artists featured include those considered the most influential to emerge from the region during the last 50 years, such as Brazilian conceptual artist Cildo Meireles, whose work is currently being exhibited at Tate Modern, London and Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Clark, who along with Ivan Serpa, founded the Neo-Concretist art movement. Doris Salcedo is also included, who caused a stir with her piece Shibboleth ― creating a subterranean chasm that stretched the length of the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern. The work of new and emerging talents is also featured, such as Miguel Calderon, labelled the “enfant terrible of contemporary art” and who has been described as having “a knack for pushing crass stereotypes and clichés to absurd and provocative extremes”.

Encompassing the political and personal, Contemporary Art in Latin America is highly unique in its approach to exploring the artistic movements of this region, giving those with a genuine interest in art and culture an insight that is rich, engaging, shocking and inspiring.

◇ 『Latin American Art』

This is the first comprehensive and authoritative survey of an important and increasingly popular field. The wider public and scholars alike will welcome the full treatment of the different histories and cultural traditions that have given each country its own character. Major artists such as Wifredo Lam, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Fernando Botero are seen in a wider context, and the exploration of the rich and important heritage of previously overlooked countries such as Ecuador, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Bolivia will be a revelation to many. Springing from complex cultural roots, Latin American art is fresh, varied and often startling in its originality. Its vast range and astonishing qualities are represented here in over 300 outstanding images.

◇ 『Twentieth-Century Art of Latin America』

The twentieth-century art of Latin America is art in the western tradition, and its leading figures―Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Diego Rivera, Joaquín Torres-García, to name only a few―have achieved international stature. Yet much of the writing about this art has offered either a victimized view of an art tradition dominated by foreign models or a romanticized view of what Latin American art should be. This pathfinding book, by contrast, seeks not to "invent" Latin American art but to look at it from the points of view of its own artists and critics.

Drawing on some forty years of studying and teaching Latin American art, Jacqueline Barnitz surveys the major currents and artists of the twentieth century in Mexico, the Caribbean, and South America (including Brazil). She progresses chronologically from modernismo and the break with nineteenth-century academic art to some of the trends of the 1980s, setting each movement within its historical and cultural contexts. This grand survey of modern Latin American art will thus be the essential guide to a vibrant art tradition, as well as a vital teaching tool. Lavishly illustrated with color and black-and-white reproductions of major works, it will be useful to artists, collectors, historians, writers, and social scientists, as well as art historians.

◇ 『Latin American Art of the 20th Century, Second Edition (World of Art)』

This compelling and comprehensive survey introduces an exceptionally rich, fascinating and complex art. Edward Lucie-Smith discusses major subjects and issues: Magic Realism, Expressionism and other concepts shared with Latin American literature; the great muralists Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco; the interaction of politics, society and art; the continuing interest in folk art; and the dialogue between avant-garde European and North American movements and 'indigenist' thinking in the work of artists such as Wifredo Lam, Matta, Rufino Tamayo and Frida Kahlo. In this revised edition, a new final section presents the leading artists of today, some of whose work in the fields of interactive installation, photography and video art reveals a continent embracing the experimental and the new.
