据え付け、取付け、設置の意味から転じて、展示空間を含めて作品とみなす手法を指す。彫刻の延長として捉えられたり、音や光といった物体に依拠しない素材を活かした作品や、観客を内部に取り込むタイプの作品などに適用される。特定の場所と密接に結びつく（サイト・スペシフィック）ことや、多くは短期間しか存在しないなどの特徴も付随する。語義の捉え方でいくらでも遡ることができるが、先駆としてよく名が挙がるのは、アパートの一室をまるごと作品化したＫ・シュヴィッタースの《メルツバウ》である。ムーヴメントとして作品を取り巻く空間に関心が集まったのは、1950年代末頃にＡ・カプローの活動を中心に注目を集めた環境芸術であろう。60年代において、ヴィデオ・アートにおいて映像以外にモニタやカメラを含めた作品形態をヴィデオ・インスタレーションと呼称したあたりが端緒と思われるが、同じ頃「よりよい作品とは作品の外部に関係するもの」と述べたＲ・モリスや「場としての彫刻」を唱えたＣ・アンドレをはじめとするミニマリズムが、要素を切り詰めることで作品と空間との関わりへの注目を先鋭化させていく流れに伴って、絵画や彫刻と区別するための便宜的な用語としてジャーナリズムを通じて70年代に入って一般化した。作品に使われる素材が特別の価値を持たないというオブジェ概念や、アルテ・ポーヴェラ、シュポール／シュルファス、もの派など、作品設置行為や物体の周囲の空間に目を向けさせた70年代前後の動向、または反復によって空間を埋めるポップ・アートなどもインスタレーションとの関わりが深い。用語としては広義が広く曖昧で、空間に着目するアプローチが一般化したいま、特別にこの手法だけが取り出されて議論されることはほとんどないのが現状である。
