- いかなることも絶対に確実だと思ってはならない。
- 証拠を隠すことにより信用させてはならない。証拠は必ず明るみに出るのだから。
人が考えることを妨げてはならない。あなたは必ず勝利するのだから。自分の勝利が確実だからと言って、考えることを緩めてはならない。- 反対にあったら、それが家族からであっても、自分の権威ではなく議論によって克服するよう努力せよ。権威による勝利は幻想なのだから。
- 他の人の権威に対して敬意を払ってはならない。権威者には常に、その反対の意見を唱える権威者がいるのだから。
- 有害と思える考えを力で抑えてはならない。抑えようとすれば、その有害と思える考えがあなたを抑えようとするだろう。
- 自分の考えが常識はずれであることを恐れてはならない。現在受け入れられているあらゆる考えは、最初は常識はずれだったのだから。
- 安易に同意することではなく、知性的に異議を唱えることに喜びを感じるようにせよ。知性は尊ぶべきであり、前者より後者のほうが知性を尊ぶことにつながる。
- 真実が不都合なものであっても真実に対して実直でなければならない。真実を隠そうとすると、より不都合な結果を招くのだから。
- 愚か者の楽園に住む者が幸福でも、それを羨んではならない。愚か者のみが、それを幸福と感じるのだから。

◇ A Liberal Deacalogue by Bertrand Russell - The Bertrand Russell Society
Perhaps the essence of the Liberal outlook could be summed up in a new decalogue, not intended to replace the old one but only to supplement it. The Ten Commandments that, as a teacher, I should wish to promulgate, might be set forth as follows:
1. Do not feel absolutely certain of anything.
2. Do not think it worth while to proceed by concealing evidence, for the evidence is sure to come to light.
3. Never try to discourage thinking for you are sure to succeed.
4. When you meet with opposition, even if it should be from your husband or your children, endeavor to overcome it by argument and not by authority, for a victory dependent upon authority is unreal and illusory.
5. Have no respect for the authority of others, for there are always contrary authorities to be found.
6. Do not use power to suppress opinions you think pernicious, for if you do the opinions will suppress you.
7. Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.
8. Find more pleasure in intelligent dissent than in passive agreement, for, if you value intelligence as you should, the former implies a deeper agreement than the latter.
9. Be scrupulously truthful, even if the truth is inconvenient, for it is more inconvenient when you try to conceal it.
10. Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool's paradise, for only a fool will think that it is happiness."
