Am 07.11.2013 sprach Jeff Wall in der Pinakothek der Moderne über seine Arbeit und seine besondere Beziehung zu München.Der kanadische Künstler Jeff Wall hat wie kaum ein anderer Künstler seiner Generation (1946 in Vancouver geboren und dort lebend) die Möglichkeiten bildnerischer Gestaltung, die Grenzen zwischen den verschiedenen künstlerischen Gattungen auszuloten versucht. Seine komplex komponierten Werke bewegen sich zwischen Dokument und Inszenierung, zwischen Fiktion und Realität und definieren das Fotografische als Bild neu. München hat sich schon früh zu einem Zentrum der Jeff Wall-Rezeption entwickelt, bereits seit den frühen 1980er Jahren war sein Werk hier präsent, wurde ausgestellt, gesammelt, mit Preisen geehrt und publiziert.
Die Ausstellung »Jeff Wall in München«, die in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler entstanden ist, vereint nun erstmals die in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen Münchens vertretenen Arbeiten. Vor allem in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren entstanden, gibt diese 20 Werke umfassende Auswahl einen pointierten Überblick über die wichtigsten Aspekte in Jeff Walls Schaffen, teils mit heute berühmten, oftmals gezeigten Arbeiten wie The Thinker, aber auch durch Werke, die zu den weniger bekannten und selten gezeigten zählen wie The Smoker.

Wall (1948) is eager to challenge preconceived notions and expectations, also about his own work. Days before the opening of the exhibition Jeff Wall: Tableaux Pictures Photographs 1996-2013, the artist and curator of photography Hripsimé Visser stroll through the exhibition and discuss clichés, fact and fiction around his work. This video introduces the exhibition at the Stedelijk and casts a light on Wall's sometimes mystical and at the same time monumental photography and method which moves between reminiscence, mise en scene and realism.
