Candidates should demonstrate the following qualities:

  • Profound knowledge of the contemporary art scene
  • An instinct for the development of art in its social context
  • A vision of communicating art through exhibitions, publications and other formats to a local and international public
  • Competence in directing and motivating a dynamic team
  • Experience in programming and the realization of exhibitions and leading an exhibition institution.
  • Dedication to finding donors and sponsors, winning their support and gaining their long-term loyalty.
  • Willingness to assist in the positioning of the Löwenbräu Kunstareal in its local and international art context and openness to the collaboration and integration with other partners of Zurich’s cultural landscape.
  • Ability to communicate in a multilingual context (Working languages German and English)

Beatrix Ruf (born 1960, Singen, Germany[1]) is a German art curator. Ruf is the director of the Kunsthalle Zurich, associate editor for JRP-Ringier, and the artistic director of the Ringier Collection. In 2012, she was listed in the top ten of the most influential people in the art world by Art Review. From november 2014 on, Ruf will be the new artistic director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, as a replacement of Ann Goldstein.[2]

Ruf started her career as curator of the Kunstmuseum Thurgau between 1994 and 1998.[3] She has been the artistic director of the Ringier Collection since 1995. In 1998 she was named as a member of the Art commission of Swiss Re.[4]


From 1998 until 2001, Ruf was the director of Kunsthaus Glarus. In 1999, she joined the board of the Schweizerische Graphische Gesellschaft (SGG).[4]


Ruf replaced Bernhard Bürgi in 2001 as director at Kunsthalle Zurich.[5] In 2012, she completed the acquisition, remodelling and extension of the Kunsthalle Zürich building at the Löwenbräu building in Zürich. That year, she also served on the jury for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the Artissima Illy Present Future Prize.[6]


Ruf has served as a jury member in commissions and has curated numerous exhibitions, written essays and published catalogues on contemporary art.[4] In 2006 she curated the Tate Triennial for Tate Britain, London.[4] She co-created the 2008 Yokohama Triennale.[1]
