◇ Jaroslaw Kozlowski: Information from Answers.com

(b Srem, nr Poznan, 28 Jan 1945). Polish conceptual artist. He studied at the Poznan College of Art (1963-9), and he was Rector there from 1981. He lived in Poznan and in Berlin after gaining a DAAD (Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst) scholarship in 1985. His gallery events, environments, books, objects and photographs spring from the ephemeral and conceptual art of the 'neo-avant-garde'. Metaphysics, Physics, ics (1972-4) consists of self-contained exhibition works concerning the reciprocal relations of objects, images and sentences as well as those of signified, sign and signifier. The Exercises in Semiotics (1977), in which dozens of postcards with roses subtitled with single sentences in several languages (e.g. '"This lovely red rose is a red rose", said John') illustrate the tension between denoted objects and connoted meanings and question the image/picture and langue/parole relationships (see SEMIOTICS), rendering the concept analysed as either ideal or ambiguous. Wall Sculptures (bricks beneath the plaster exposed to the gallery visitors), Drawing Facts, Drawing Performances and Number, Time and Weight Drawings (1977-81) all turn the procedures of representation into tautologies, into literal, factual, quantitive actions. The environment Still-life (1985), which consisted of a drawing on the gallery wall of the artist in the act of drawing, and objects for the still-life arranged in the gallery space next to a cheap commercial still-life picture on a drawing-room plinth, dealt with the concepts of the real and the artificial and questioned the logic of mental cognition versus visual perception.

XXXVII CONTINUUM
PERFOMANCE

We have pleasure to present You Jarosław Kozłowski's performance held as a part of the performative program of the exhibition "For Each Gesture Another Character". Kozłowski's Drawing Fact XXIV can be seen in the level O gallery. Since 1988, artist's works have had a common title, Continuum, and a changing numbering. Continuum I, is the work which features an alarm clock for the first time. It measures the time needed for a blackboard covered with white chalk to dry, after it has been carefully cleaned. The collection of 34 immobilised alarm clocks is what's left of the former series. Each performance has the same scenario, but different time and place. Repeated for over thirty years, every following event turns out to be a new experience for the author.
