The major summer exhibition is dedicated to Wolfgang Tillmans. Tillmans was born in 1968 in Remscheid, Germany. At 20 he lived in Hamburg, where he began his work as an artist. He studied at the College of Art and Design in Bournemouth in the early 90s. Between 1992 and 2007, he lived and worked predominantly in London; afterward, he shifted his focus to Berlin.Tillmans first made a name for himself in the early 1990s through today iconic photographs that captured the attitude of an entire generation and a youth culture of which he was part and which previously had no images of its own. However, he soon widened his focus more and more, experimenting with the means of photography to identify new images – works created with and without camera, photographs printed as C-prints on photographic paper, as inkjet prints on paper, or as photocopies.
Creating images at the edges of the visible lies at the heart of Tillmans’s art. He seeks to provoke visibility or, conversely, to obfuscate it. Since the late 1980s he has created an extraordinary and extremely influential body of work.The exhibition is the Fondation Beyeler’s first comprehensive examination of photography as a medium, though an exceptional group of pictures from the artist has been a part of the collection for quite some time. It will demonstrate that the foreground of Tillmans’ work is not photography in the classical sense, but the creation of pictures. The exhibition is being developed in collaboration with Wolfgang Tillmans.
