The Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg presents a space for experience conceived by the photographer Claus Goedicke in the Kunst-Station in the Wolfsburg main train station.
The artist puts together digital compositions that are printed on rolls of wallpaper. In the process, the image material that is collected is not brought together to form a homogeneous image but each motif instead stands for itself alone. Although the images seem to be distributed loosely and without a plan over the entire piece of wallpaper, they actually adhere to a strict choreography. Nevertheless, they do not have any inner connection and they also do not function chronologically or historically.
The basic structure that connects all of them is the pattern on the monochrome background. In the case of the wallpaper “Grüße vom Mond” (greetings from the moon), it is an ornament of a human forearm. On the wallpaper, it is also possible to see photos of, for example, a rocket, the earth, and of birds and peonies. On the other wallpapers, Goedicke arranged parts of the human body, thus giving the wallpaper a superordinate structure.
Ultimately, it is left up to viewers to develop new stories in which new meanings emerge from the motifs. Seen figuratively, the gaps between the individual pictorial motifs also allow space for one’s own associations and interpretations. The title “Grüße vom Mond” also allows a lot of space for one’s own thoughts and reveries. And the information in the images also invites guests to invent their own stories themselves while waiting. Stories of journeys, of arriving and departing, of joyous greetings, of the sadness of goodbyes, the joy and impatience of waiting...
“Grüße vom Mond” is already the sixth project in the “Kunst-Station” in the Wolfsburg main train station. Since 2006, the Kunst-Station has been designed artistically in a collaboration of the Deutsche Bahn AG and the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg.

In his oeuvre, Claus Goedicke has added a new, markedly contemporary perspective to the photographic still life. His subjet usually deals with the most familiar everyday items, plastic containers and fruit. As such they are not only seen as objects of everyday life, however, but are also placed in the historic context of the still life. The pictures, which oscillate between still lifes and factual photographs, mirror the aesthetics of advertising in their reflecting surfaces, precise lighting, and flawless objects in frequently extreme color - aesthetics which Goedicke nevertheless likes to thwart at the same time. In 1999, the artist was awarded the prize for supporting upcoming artists by the state of Northrhine Westphalia. To cite the laudatory speech, "Claus Goedicke builds his photographs like a painter does his picture ... Among the younger photographers, he is the one who is most explicit in his dialogue with painting." This book features selected works from Claus Goedicke's photographic oeuvre, from the beginning of the nineties until today.

Claus Goedicke exhibits his work in the form of wallpaper, departing from what has become the habitual presentation of the photographic print as a framed object. In his digital compositions, Goedicke arranges details of the human body into ornamentation that acts like an oscillating curtain in front of another picture plane with different photographs. The abstraction and the pattern’s arrangement at once disrupt and sensitize one’s contemplation of the photographs, which cite various types of images and play off against each other.

作家の青田真也さんは、洗剤のボトルやガラスの瓶、木製の民芸品など生活に身近な日用品の表面をやすりで削ぎ落とし、表層を曖昧にする立体作品を制作しています。
今回は青田さんに、素材選びの話から聞いてみました。カノ「身近な日用品や、民芸品など、見慣れたものを削って作品にされていますが、何を素材にするかは、どのように選んでいるのですか。」
青田「最初はランダムにいろいろなものを削っていましたが、作業していく中で、普段見ているイメージが強いものや、作品を見た人が元の形を想像しやすいものを選ぶようになりました。
青田「僕の中で、ここまで削る、という基準があって、元の形が分かる程度にとどめます。作品を見た人が、『見たことがあるけれど、もしかしたら違うかもしれない』と感じるような、曖昧なものにしておきたいです。
機能も、出来る限り残しておきたいです。例えば、プラスチックのボトルだったら、ボトルが破れるまで削ってしまったら、それは作品ではなくなってしまいます。」カノ「作品を見た人の意外な反応はありましたか。」
青田 「これはどのような素材で制作したのですか、と聞かれることが多いです。
プラスチックボトルの作品は、粘土で作ったものですか、と言われたり。
この間、視覚障害のあるこどもたちとワークショップを行った際は、手触りだけだと、布を巻いているのですか、と言われたりしました。
そのような反応を聞くのは作家としてすごく面白いです。
多くの人が見たことがあるようなものを素材に使うのも、見る人がどう感じるのか知りたいからかもしれないですね。」今回の展覧会では、ボトルの作品を多数用いてインスタレーションとして発表する予定です。
