ブレストに生まれる。1944年、国立農業学校卒業。1954年、デビュー作『消しゴム』を発表。ロラン・バルトによって絶賛される（「対物的文学」）。1956年からの『新フランス評論』誌上の評論で、自らヌーヴォー・ロマンの旗振り役となる。
1961年、映画『去年マリエンバートで』で脚本を務める。同年の7月から8月にかけて来日している。2004年、アカデミー・フランセーズの会員（座席番号32）に選出される。
1960年の『懸賞』と1963年の『石蹴り遊び』の2作の長編小説により英語圏においてもラテンアメリカを代表する作家と見なされるようになり、イタリアの映画監督ミケランジェロ・アントニオーニによって短編小説「悪魔の涎」が映画化され（映画タイトルは『欲望』）、スペイン語圏を越えて世界的に知られる作家となった。1973年に『マヌエルの教科書』でフランスのメディシス賞を受賞。1984年に白血病により死去。
